What we love…

great boy themed reading content that has questions where kids demonstrate comprehension and mastery along with a scorecard

What we’d love to see…

more chapters for kids to read, my son loved the sports ones and kept asking for more

Summary

Overall, this is a great reading app that has a lot of potential for kids who may struggle with reading.  For my son one of the biggest challenges to reading is finding a topic that he likes along with being able to understand it.  He is now able to do both with this app!

Our Rating

Boys Only Reading ComprehensionBoys Only Reading Comprehension by Reinvent Recess Digital is a universal app for iOS that features 15 chapters or passages for kids to read and then take a short test on to determine if they comprehended what they read.  The multi-user app has topics which range from sports, to science and history with both fiction and non-fiction choices.  Upon opening the app and adding the admin and first user, the child can pick ten chapters to read which will be sent to their scorecard.  Users are tested on a summary of the text, identifying items in sequence via  timeline of events (first, second, third), finding an unknown word, problem/solution.

Getting my son to understand what he is reading has always been a challenge for me.  He loves anything sports related so when I had him test the app he picked out all of the sports related chapters along with a few others.  I then had him sit down and read a story to see what he did.  He used an iPad for reading the story and doing the questions.  One of the first comments he made was that the stories were “real” and that he could actually identify with some of them.  As he carefully read the passages – he got better at this as time went on he started getting more of the questions right.  As part of his daily homework, my son can read for 15 minutes and then have a discussion about what he has read.  We used the app multiple times for him to read and then take the test to demonstrate what he learned.  After completing the passage, you are given real time feedback on any answers that were right or wrong and if they were wrong what the correct answer was.  Using a timeline was one of the most challenging things for my son, because although he remembered the events in the story at times it was hard for him to sequence them.  Using the app definitely helped him with that as well as helping him to really take the time to understand what he was reading.  At times when he struggled we also worked on having him tell me the story then going back to answer the questions.

iPad Screenshot 2

As a mom, I really liked that the app encouraged my son to read and comprehend what he was reading.  I also liked that the questions were multiple choice so my son could pick from a field of correct answers similar to tests he takes at school.  The topics were very relevant and interesting to him especially the sports related ones – and had him wanting to use the app for homework — which I call a huge win! I also liked that some passages were shorter or longer – this helped me with having my son pick and choose which one to complete based on the time we had available.  Currently longer passages are marked with a * so you know ahead of time they are longer.  I also liked that my son could go back to the passage to verify what he had read before submitting the answers to the questions.  This gave him a “double check” that helped him feel more confident in his answers.  I also really liked that the scorecard was emailed to me so we could identify areas that we might need to focus more on – and I could share it with his teacher to demonstrate that he was doing reading homework nightly.

iPad Screenshot 4

In terms of improvements, I would like to see more than 15 chapters or passages contained within the app.  At this point, my son has used it quite a bit and has “memorized” some of the stories since we have done them over and over again.  I would like to see some additional passages so we could use it on a more routine basis for reading homework.

Overall, this is a great reading app that has a lot of potential for kids who may struggle with reading.  For my son one of the biggest challenges to reading is finding a topic that he likes along with being able to understand it.  He is now able to do both with this app!

What we love…

bright colorful graphics, good problem solving for the characters, use of parental gate

What we’d love to see…

Tweaks to the bookshelf area allowing you to directly access apps you already own and have downloaded as well as the use of “safe” YouTube video previews like after you read the book.  Would also like more interactivity in the books

Summary

Fun app that allows you to read a variety of books about characters and then see a video performance after it is completed.

Our Rating

Bamba Books Bamba Books by Bamba is an app for iOS featuring a variety of storybooks with characters from other Bamba apps. The app has three modes, you can either “read the story yourself”, have the story read to you with a narrator or watch a video about the story.  The video tab requires the solving a simple math problem and after solving it, pulls you through to YouTube to watch the video.  The app narration is available in English, Spanish, German, and Russian.  The free portion of the app contains three books and with a IAP you can purchase an additional three books.  In addition, you can click on the video tab to see YouTube previews of various Bamba apps (and later other videos since you are pulled directly to YouTube); and finally a bookshelf of Bamba apps, you are required to solve another math problem before being pulled into the iTunes store even if you already own the app and have it installed on your device.

Overall, I like the concept of “one stop shopping” for the books.  The narration and graphics are well done.  It is easy to turn on and off the narration via  tap of the “lips” at the top of the screen allowing an independent reader more control.  I love the creativity within the app during the reading of the books, especially making the cake with candy, books, flowers and ice cream!  For the farm story, I also really liked how sequential the app was and followed along nicely especially for new readers.    Each of the stories also has the characters that practice problem solving such as how to decorate the cake, how to get the animals back in the pen and how to navigate the airport.

I would like to see word highlighting within the stories as they are read aloud.  For the stories, such as the birthday cake, I’d like to see more interactivity.  Right now it is really a story being read to you and the only element of the story you can interact with is the tapping of an arrow rather than mixing the cake, putting it in the oven, frosting the cake.  I’d also like to see more stories added to the IAP version of the app to give you more value for the dollar.

Oddly, after you finish reading the story, the app does have the video play without pulling you through to the YouTube version so I’d like to see consistency on this throughout the app.  For the YouTube video portion, I’d like to see the video’s play within the app rather than requiring you to solve a math problem and pulling you through to YouTube.  Although when you go through the first time, you are taken directly to the video you selected, if you tap on the video’s to the left you will see advertising as well as other choices for video’s.  In terms of other improvements, it would be nice if you clicked on a Bamba app that you owned and was installed on your device if it would open up skipping the iTunes store directly.  Right now, this section is really an advertising area which shows the preview of the app and if you click “download now” it requires the solving of a math problem in order to access iTunes.

The first three books in the app are free, and the other three books require an IAP of $3.99.

What we love…

Word highlighting as it is read and tappable words, classic Peanuts charm, game & a book

What we’d love to see…

More levels in the game, sound effects added to the story

Summary

Classic Peanuts fun as Charlie Brown and his friends play football in both a narrated storybook and a game.

Our Rating

PEAN01_Football_ICONSnoopy’s All- Star Football is a new app from Cupcake Digital featuring Charles M. Schulz’s beloved Snoopy and the Peanuts crew. It includes both a storybook app and a football- themed game app. The story is narrated with word highlighting as it is read, and touching individual words will cause them to be spoken. Music, sound effects and narration volumes can be independently adjusted or switched off. The app has no adverts or in-app purchases. External links to the appstore and Social Media are fairly well-hidden and behind a parental gate (you enter your birth year to access).

The story is a classic Peanuts tale. Charlie Brown decides to organize a game of football, Snoopy thinks it is a great idea and Charlie Brown and Snoopy set out to organize teams. Many of the Peanuts gang including Snoopy, Charlie Brown, Sally, Linus, Pigpen, Schroeder and Peppermint Patty join in the fun. At Sally’s insistence the game is boys vs girls and the boys team are one short but a mystery player joins their team. After a nail biting game it all comes down to the last kick, and the mystery player’s identity is revealed. You’ll have to read the story to find out who it is and who won the game.

This is not an interactive book app, but more of an eBook as there are no interactive elements except the tappable words; but the word highlighting as it is read and tappable words are both great features for emerging readers.  The color illustrations show all the classic Peanuts comic strip charm, but  I would love to see some sound effects added to the story (they are in the game but not the book) to add to the atmosphere.

2014-Nov-17 22.20.47

As well as the story the app also includes a game -Charlie Brown and friends are playing a game of football and you need to help them score a touchdown. The game has 20 levels, plus a bonus level which is unlocked if you score 3 stars on all the earlier levels. The first level is very simple just requiring a single pass, but as you move up the levels it gets more complicated with multiple passes and opposition players tackling if you take too long about your move. One team is made up of classic Peanuts characters including Charlie Brown and Peppermint Patty and the other team is made up of players who all look like identical generic Peanuts characters, it would be nice to see identifiable characters on both teams with the boys playing the girls to reflect the storyline of the book.

2014-Nov-19 22.03.37

My 7 year old son is a big Peanuts fan (and he especially loves Snoopy and Woodstock) so I thought he would be the perfect audience to test out the app. Although he knows very little about American Football, he was immediately excited to see the app and enjoyed listening to the story. He picked up the game very quickly and was soon better at it than I was ! (many of the levels took me multiple attempts to complete!). His only complaint was that he completed all the levels quite quickly (it took him about 40 minutes) and so he would really like to see more levels added.

Overall, this app is sure to delight any Peanuts fan with its classic story about Charlie Brown and the gang playing football and with the bonus of a Peanuts football-themed game.

What we love…

2 apps in one! Movie storybook with word highlighting as it is read, and 3 soccer related games including a Halloween -themed one.

What we’d love to see…

More easy levels in the games for the younger players

Summary

If you are looking for a Halloween app that you can keep using after Halloween this is a great value- a Halloween game, 2 other games and a book app.

Our Rating

RIO 2 Sky Soccer Halloween!Rio 2 Sky Soccer by Cupcake Digital is a universal app which stars the characters from the hit movie Rio 2. It is a really two apps in one –  a narrated storybook app and a game app. The app includes 3 different soccer related games including Spooky Soccer especially for Halloween. It has no adverts or in-app purchases, external links are behind a parental gate (accessed by entering your year of birth).

Book

The storybook doesn’t try to retell the whole plot of the movie, but rather retells one story from it. Children who have seen the movie will enjoy it, but it can be equally enjoyed by those who haven’t seen the movie too. Blu, Jewel and their family are living in the jungle. Blu is getting used to living in the wild and trying to create a good impression on his father-in-law, Eduardo. Blu accidentally causes a confrontation with the neighboring colony of Red Macaws, who challenge the Blue Macaws to a showdown in the Pit of Doom. Blu feels awful about the trouble he has caused and worries his new friends will get hurt, but much to his relief he discovers the showdown is actually a game of sky soccer ! But how will it turn out ?  Will Blu get to play ? Who will win? You’ll have to read the story to find out!

iPad Screenshot 5

The book features screenshots from the movie, background music and professional narration with word highlighting as it is read. Narration, music and sound effects can be independently adjusted or switched off. The story does not feature any animation or interactive elements, so it is more of an eBook experience than an interactive book app.

Games

Star Soccer – there are 40 unlockable levels in this game and players can earn up to 3 stars for each level. The aim of the game is to have Blu score a soccer goal against his opponent. This starts out simple enough with a straight shot on goal, but rapidly gets harder as new elements are introduced, so players have to use their skills to make multiple passes, deal with moving players on both teams and make use of players and objects to bounce the ball off. If you manage to get 3 stars in all 40 levels you unlock a bonus.

Spooky Soccer – this is similar style game to Star Soccer but with a Halloween theme. The graphics, music, obstacles and sound effects and all create a spooky atmosphere, and the soccer ball is replaced by a Jack-o-Lantern. Instead of collecting stars you collect ghosts, and there are 40 levels to unlock. The dead trees littering the landscape add even more challenge as the player tries to navigate around them, or use them for rebounds.

iPad Screenshot 3

Soccer Smash– this game has 1 player and 2 player modes. In 1 player mode you play against the computer, and in 2 player mode you compete against another player who is also playing on your iPad. 2 birds are playing Sky Soccer in a head to head competition, you need to score 5 goals before your opponent to win the game!

iPad Screenshot 4

Many book apps have some added games with a few levels but this includes 2 games with 40 levels each, plus a multi-player game -enough to keep players busy for a long time. In Star Soccer and Spooky Soccer the levels do get challenging very quickly, although you can take as many moves as you like to complete a level. It would be nice to see some more easy levels added, to prevent younger players getting frustrated.

Overall, this app has a lot of content for the price. If you are looking for a Halloween app that you can keep using after Halloween this is a great value- a Halloween game, 2 other games and a book app.
