SnapPower Safe Light and USB Charger by SnapPower – Review

What we love…

super easy to install SnapPower Safe Light allows you to childproof and install night lights throughout your house.  Snap Power Charger is a perfect outlet replacement especially if you have a home office where you might need to charge your electronics without having them downstairs

What we’d love to see…

ability to use in a bathroom or kitchen using GFCI

Summary

Easy to install child proofing solution that has the benefit of pathway lighting and no covers to lose or cords to lose when charging your cell phone. I love how easy it is to access my outlets now and don’t worry my toddler will see me removing one of the plastic outlet covers and try to do so himself potentially resulting in a hazard.  Simple.  Easy.  A must have product in my home.

SnapPower Safe Light by SnapPower is an easy to install wall replacement switch that not only childproofs but adds lights so you don’t need to take up one of the outlets with a nightlight.  As a mom of a toddler, I increasingly found myself telling my son “no” when it came to power outlets.  I remember childproofing with my first involved cumbersome outlet covers or the little white outlet covers you would remove just so you could vacuum and then stick back in.  I knew that there had to be a better solution.  At our house, in addition to needing to childproof, many of our outlets had nightlights plugged into at least one of the outlets.  We have some pretty dark corners, especially at the bottom of the stairs.  Other products in the lineup include switch plate covers for light switches
Installation was a snap – it took me more time to go downstairs and turn off the breaker than it did to install each of the three SnapPower Safe Lights.  You simply switch off the power, remove the outlet cover, and then insert the new outlet cover which has metal prongs on each side.  These prongs go inside the outlet and provide power for the LED guidelight at the bottom of the outlet.  Not only are they childproof, but you gain an outlet back and nighttime lighting.  Each outlet contains a sensor which turns the light on and off based on the light conditions or you can set it to high or low, and it costs mere pennies a day to use.  It’s so much brighter than the previous blue nightlights we were using, but not too bright if my older son gets up during the night to use the bathroom.

We also tested the Snap Power Charger, which allows you to convert your outlet to a USB charger, without losing the outlet.  We have a lot of tech in our house – and sometimes our home charging dock is full – or I might just want to plug in my iPhone if it’s running low on battery.  Installation for this was simple as well – the outlet screw provides the connection to power with the power prongs providing power and you simply snap on the cover.

For purposes of the review – I have used both the SnapPower SafeLight and Snap Power USB Charger for over a month – and I honestly love them.  I love that I don’t need to fiddle with plastic outlet covers if I need to do a quick vacuum of the playroom or worry about coming down the stairs in the dark.  When I use the SnapPower SafeLight I simply insert the plug of whatever item I want to use, slide the outlet covers over and am on my way.  When I am done, I unplug and don’t have to worry any longer about putting something else back into the outlet or fiddling with putting the cover back on.

The SnapPower Guidelight and SnapPower USB Charger work on standard outlets – they do not work with GFCI outlets due to the need for a reset button – so you can’t use them in the kitchen or bathrooms.  I would love to see this in the future although I am sure it will require a redesign of some sort.

Overall, this has been a fantastic solution for night time lighting, childproofing and charging for our family.  I love how easy it is to access my outlets now and don’t worry my toddler will see me removing one of the plastic outlet covers and try to do so himself potentially resulting in a hazard.  Simple.  Easy.  A must have product in my home. Items can be purchased directly from SnapPower or via Amazon.

RRP of SnapPower Safe Light is $17.00 USD for a single or 10 for $140 USD.

RRP of the SnapPower USB charger is $20 USD for a single or a three pack for $54 USD.

The Hub Plus by MyCharge is a portable battery charger/powerbank designed with integrated cables including: Apple® Lightning™ cable, micro-USB and a plug so that if it dies you can easily plug it into the wall and recharge your devices.  It will charge two devices at once – one using the Lightening cable and the other using micro-USB.  This charger, unlike many others on the market came fully charged out of the box – that meant that if you had a dead device you could be charging it within moments rather than waiting for the charger to charge and then charging your device.

I loved that I didn’t need to worry about carrying cables along with my charger.  It all folded up into a small power brick with the cords and plug storing nicely inside which meant I could put it in my diaper bag, purse, or backpack on the go.  It also kept a charge well even when I wasn’t actively using it – I went three weeks without having to use it and it was perfectly charged and ready to use when I started to get the dreaded low battery on my iPhone.  It also charged my dead iPhone to being able to turn it on within 10 minutes which is good for a powerbank – usually I have to plug it into my car charger or home charger in order to get it to turn on quickly. I loved how fast it charged my iPhone and got me up and running in a few minutes.  It is small and light which meant it didn’t weigh down my bag when not in use.  It also had a feature which turned off the charger when your device was fully charged so that it didn’t overcharge.

In terms of enhancements, I would like to see longer cords for the charger. Right now they are very short and if you are trying to charge your device in your bag and still use it, there simply isn’t enough length and you are left holding the charger along with your device.  I’d also like to see a USB port which you could plug your own cables into.

Easy to use charger that includes integrated cables  and wall plug that comes fully charged and ready to use.  This charger is slim and fit into my bag easily while keeping a charge until I needed it.

Available from myCharge and Amazon for ranging from $79 – $99 USD

When you travel internationally it is important to have the right tools to charge your smartphone, tablet and accessories whatever corner of the globe you are in. As a frequent traveller I am always on the lookout for products that will make my life easier when traveling and on a recent trip to Europe I tested the World Adapter MUV Micro USB Plug and Buzz 2 in 1 Charging Cable from SKROSS.

World Adapter MUV Micro USB Plug

This adapter plug has slide out prongs of varying shapes and sizes which allow you to use it in over 150 countries! It is very simple to use–just slide out the correct lever when you want to use it, for storage you press the large black button on the side and you can then slide the prongs back safely inside the adapter. The input plug has a variety of different slots so it can accommodate plugs from the same range of countries. As well as acting as a plug adapter it also comes with a 2 port USB charger. This can be used by simply plugging it into the MUV Micro adapter plug. As an added bonus if you are in the UK or Ireland it can also be plugged directly into the wall socket, leaving the MUV Micro adapter plug free to be used for another device. I used this extensively on my recent visit to the UK and Ireland and loved that it did double duty- I had 2 devices charging via the USB charger plugged directly into the wall at the same time as using the adapter for my regular Apple charger. In other countries I could still use the USB charger by plugging it into the adapter. The one downside of the USB charger is that it has a maximum output of 2A- so you can use it to charge 2 smartphones at once or an iPad but it won’t charge a iPhone plus an iPad simultaneously at full power. The MUV Micro USB costs approx $35 and is available from Skross.com, Amazon and many travel shops.

Buzz 2 in 1 Charging Cable

As someone who travels with both Apple and Android devices, one of my a must have travel accessories is a charging cable that can be used for both. I carry this in my hand luggage or daypack and know I’ll always have the right cable for whatever needs charging, without the need to carry two cables. I’ve used many different brands of dual charging cable but the Buzz 2 in 1 cable has a feature I haven’t seen before – a built-in alarm. This small device puts out a loud alarm anytime that it is plugged in but no charge is flowing through the cable. This gives it 2 practical uses. It lets you know when your device is finished charging- which is useful if you are juggling charging multiple devices with a limited number of chargers. I’m regularly juggling chargers when traveling with 3 kids- each with their own iPad plus my phone, tablet, backup batteries and more. Its other application is as an anti-theft device when charging your phone or tablet in a public place such as a coffee shop or airport terminal- you immediately know if anyone unplugs your device to steal it. This is a useful enough feature that I’m using this cable for charging when I’m out and about back in the USA too. The one downside of the cable is that  it isn’t a good choice for overnight charging, unless you want to be woken in the middle of the night when your device is fully charged! The cable costs approx $40 and is available from Skross.com, Amazon and many travel shops.Buzz.1
