blink: Wireless Indoor Security Camera System – Review

Blink Home MonitorBlink is a battery powered home monitoring system designed for homeowners and renters which can be easily placed throughout your residence.  The companion app, Blink for Home allows you to set motion alerts, watch live HD video, customize cameras and alert settings.  Set up is super easy – you simply plug in the Blink hub and then using your device download Blink for Home.  After opening the cameras and installing the AA lithium batteries, it’s easy to add them to your system.  After installing you can scan the QR code on the back of each camera to add it to your system.  After adding each camera, you take a photo of the location you plan to put it in so that you can easily tell which camera you want to check.  For purposes of the review I received the Blink Hub and two Blink indoor cameras.  I positioned the Hub near my router and one of the cameras near my front door.  I also placed the second camera downstairs.  There are no monthly fees, wires and it’s movable so if you find a particular location isn’t working well for you – it’s easy to move the camera.  Blink also offers a Blink XT Waterproof camera that can be used outside in the weather.

blink: Wireless Indoor Security Camera System is a battery powered home monitoring system that takes moments to set up that is perfect for those that rent, own or are simply visiting,  Through the app, you receive motion alerts, can watch live HD video, customize cameras and alerts to meet your needs.  I even brought Blink recently when I went away for a day, I grabbed my router, plugged it into the internet where we were and my cameras were online.

What we love…

blink: Wireless Indoor Security Camera System is easy to use wireless home monitoring system that helps you monitor your property including mailboxes.  It’s so easy to set up that my son did it!

What we’d love to see…

ability to toggle on/off the flash

Summary

Overall blink: Wireless Indoor Security Camera System is a great way for me to keep track of any movement in my home and watch my house from inside when I am expecting a package.  I love that it has no wires and is so easy to set up!

Our Rating

recommended-by-the-imums

I loved how easy blink: Wireless Indoor Security Camera System was to set up – I even had my 9 year old help me,  Simply scan the QR code using your iPhone or device and you take a quick snap after installing the battery.  The system was up and running in moments.  Blink has great battery life and I loved that you could move around the cameras as needed within the house easily.  Package theft is real, and I also loved that I could aim it outside to watch for when packages were delivered as well as monitor if anyone was here that wasn’t supposed to be.

One thing that I didn’t like about blink: Wireless Indoor Security Camera System was the “flash” when we used the camera.  I found that this would wake up my little one when I had it in his bedroom since it was bright.  It would be nice if there were a way to turn it off.

Overall blink: Wireless Indoor Security Camera System is a great, easy to set up home monitoring system that could be portable when I needed it to be. No wires, no fuss. I had the system up and running in about five minutes. The photo quality and videos were great and it was so easy to use! It’s great to use when away from home and the internet is running too! No phone line required.

blink: Wireless Indoor Security Camera System (as tested) RRP is $169.99. You can get a blink: Wireless Indoor Security Camera System with one camera for $99.99 USD. Blink XT Add On Camera is $119.99 USD.

SanDisk iXpand Base: Easy iPhone Back Up and Charging- Review

What we love…

Foolproof backup that happens without having to think of it, easy to download backed up items to computer or restore onto phone or iPad

What we’d love to see…

Option to choose to remove select pictures/ videos after backup instead of just having option to remove all or none.

Summary

The iXpand Base from SanDisk is an easy way to keep your iPhone and iPad photos, videos and contacts backed up. It is very easy to set up and after the initial set up if you use it as your charging station it will back your phone up every time you charge without you needing to do anything except plug your phone in

recommended-by-the-imums

If you are looking for a fast, easy, foolproof way to back up your iPhone, the SanDisk iXpand Base is the perfect solution. It can hold up to 256GB of data and is a charging station and back up solution all in one.

Set Up

Set up is a breeze:

  • install the free iXpand Base app on your iPhone.
  • Plug the SanDisk iXpand Base into an outlet with the included (6ft) power cord, then connect your iPhone charging cable to the SanDisk iXpand Base (a lightning cable is not included you do need to supply your own). The cable can be left long or wrapped around the cord manager in the bottom of the iXpand Base.
  • Open the app and connect your phone via the cable and it will automatically start scanning your phone and backing up your photos and contacts.
  • The first time you use it you need to give permission to access your photos, videos and contacts, after that everything is automatic

In Use

SanDisk iXpand Base iPhone Back Up and Charging

The iXpand Base has a slightly angled, rubberized surface that works well to hold the iPhone whilst it charges. I keep the SanDisk iXpand Base on my desk and use it every time I want to charge my iPhone or iPad during the day. I never even have to think about backing up my iPhone and iPad photos, videos and contacts – it happens automatically every time I charge it.  The first time I used it the SanDisk iXpand Base it took about an hour to fully back up my photos, videos and contacts, but now as I back it up daily it only takes a couple of minutes to update each time. After the first time whenever you plug your phone in to the iXpand Base it will start charging and simultaneously scan your phone. It will then automatically back up any new items it finds.

Once it has successfully backed up for device your are given the option to delete the backed up items from your iPhone or iPad to create space. This is an “all or nothing” option – you touch one button to remove all the backed up files. If you just want to remove select photos or videos you do this in the usual way from within your photo library.

Accessing Backups and Restoring Photos, Videos and Contacts

It is simple to access your backed up files on your iPhone, iPad or computer.

When your iOS device is connected to the iXpand base you can view any of the photos, videos or contacts you have previously backed up from this or any other iOS device. In “Settings” you can see all your backups listed, and choose which one you wish to restore from. Once you have selected a backup file you can “select all” or individually choose which images or contacts you wish to restore onto your device. Once you have selected the items to restore simply tap “restore” and they will be downloaded into your device’s photos or contacts.

Transferring Backed up Items to Computer
The simplest way to move items from the iXpand to your computer is via the iXpand’s SD card. The iXpand has an SD card slot at the back of the unit, pressing on the SD card will eject it. The SD card can then be placed into the SD card slot on your computer where you can simply drag and drop files to download them. The files are in folders labelled by the device name each backup came from with sub-folders for photos and contacts.  If you need more storage you can also remove the full SD card from your iXpand Base and replace it with a new SD card.

If you don’t have an SD card reader on your computer you can also access the files by connecting the iXpand Base to your computer using a data transfer Micro USB – USB  cable (not included.)

Setting up a new iPhone

If you lose or damage your iPhone and need to get a new one, it is very simple to restore all your old contacts, photos and videos on to your device phone. Simply download the iXpand App onto the new phone, plug it into the iXpand Base, select your old phone’s back up and tap restore.

Summary

ProLock Mini by Rug-Ed – Review

What we love…

easy to install protective case for your device which includes great drop protection.

What we’d love to see…

easier way to clean your device while in the case – particularly the screen

Summary

very protective lightweight case which protected my iPad mini from drops

Our Rating

recommended-by-the-imums

The ProLOCK Mini: iPad Mini 4 is a case designed by Rug-Ed which includes a tempered-glass screen protector, removable stand and locking fasteners with a tool which ensures that your iPad is not removed from it’s case accidentally.  The case features a handle at the top which allows for easy carrying; is thin and lightweight but protective of your device.  It also includes corner bumpers for drop protection.  The case can be used in a portrait or landscape mode on your device.  The case is tamper-proof and requires the use of a tool (which reminded me of an allen wrench) to lock in your tablet so that kids can not remove it.  Rug-Ed was started in 2012 and originally started by designing iPad cases for the educational environment.  They recently started offering the ProLOCK case for individual consumers to purchase.

As a mom, I do let my kids use my device.  Although I typically don’t worry about my younger child trying to remove the case – I have seen my older son pull the screen off of our Griffin Survivor to try to clean it.  With this case, he can’t remove the iPad without the tool – nor do I want him to.  The case is lightweight – it doesn’t add a lot of bulk or weight to my iPad Mini which generally lives in my bag for on the go usage.  The case itself was easy to install – as was the included screen protector.  You simply laid the case on the table, inserted your device tightened a few screws and within moments it was ready to use.  The screen protector took me a bit more time because I wanted to ensure it was lined up and I didn’t get bubbles in it.  I also liked that the stand was integrated rather than removable as sometimes when they are removed the stand can get lost.  The case provided great drop protection – we dropped it from a height of about four feet – my son lost his grip on it and was holding the side instead of the handle when he went to get into the car.  It fell face down on a tar surface.  There were no bumps or scratches to the iPad and I was able to wipe the dust off the case easily.  The case is easy to hold and is ergonomic for usage especially with the integrated plastic  stand.  There is also a soft cloth cover that can be used as well.  Ports are easy to access both for headphones and the charging cord.  You can also easily access the camera without having to remove anything from the case or anything to uncover.

In terms of improvements – I do like to wipe down my cases for devices on occasion because of germs and multiple kids using them.  I felt comfortable enough taking the outer case off to wipe that down and let it dry, but wiping down the screen was a challenge.  I settled for using a dry cloth to wipe it off.  In addition, I understand why the case does not include a holder for the tool – but I did misplace mine once.  I settled for putting it in a drawer the kids could not access so that I would not lose it in the future since it’s the only way to remove the case.

The case is available for iPad Mini 4 as well as iPad Air, Air 2 or the iPad Pro 9.7.    It is priced from $45 USD (iPad Mini) to $49 USD (iPad Air, Air 2, iPad Pro) and can be purchased directly from RugEd. Overall this is a great protective case which ensures that your iPad investment is safe and kid friendly.  I love that kids can’t remove this case easily on their own!
